Mind over Matter presents DAN BYRNE

Dan Byrne swept in off the Mersey and announced himself as a solo artist in 2023 with his debut EP, ‘Beginnings’. His powerhouse, soul-inflected vocal and deftly-executed, yet hugely accessible song-craft has quickly marked him out as an artist on the rise. Blending contemporary edge with classic influence, Byrne’s music is powerful, honest, and deeply emotive – widescreen in scope yet intimate at its core. It rocks, without question, but what truly sets him apart is the courage to weave sensitivity and vulnerability through the intensity. This isn’t just rock music… It has the heart and authenticity to connect with an audience beyond any one genre.

Using the aforementioned ‘Beginnings’ EP as a springboard for radio play and live work, in just two years, Dan has toured the UK three times, delivered standout performances at multiple festivals and found overwhelming support from Planet Rock – the UK’s leading rock station – where his first four singles amassed an impressive 25 weeks on the playlist. With that foundation firmly in place, Byrne now turns his focus to the release of his long-awaited debut solo album, marking the next powerful step in his evolution as an artist

‘This Where the Show Begins’ – a title loaded with intent – is due to arrive in Spring 2026. His journey thus far seems to be that of a quick, turbulence-free ascent. However, look back at the distance travelled and a tank full of self-belief and courage appears to be the fuel and spark that got him this far.

In the summer of 2022 and having played acoustic shows since the age of 13 in support of anyone who stopped by Liverpool as part of a UK tour – Dan, a former City of Liverpool College music student – was fronting Liverpool-based rock hopefuls, Revival Black. The band’s debut album in 2019 had already sparked a buzz, earning them loyal crowds in clubs and a growing reputation for setting an early high bar at UK rock festivals. So, when in August of 2022 the band released their second album, it didn’t surprise many who kept a keen eye and ear on the UK independent rock scene that Revival Black and their golden-throated front man found themselves entering the official UK Rock chart at number 2. The surprise came roughly a week after cementing that chart milestone… Dan Byrne had left the band.

“Yeah, there were a few raised eyebrows,” Dan admits, underplaying the reaction slightly. “But the truth was simple — the idea of doing my own thing, fully realising my musical ideas and taking complete responsibility for them, became absolute. I didn’t want to upset anyone, but I had to be honest, even if the timing looked odd from the outside.”

What followed was a period of reflection and reinvention. Dan spent the rest of 2022 contemplating, defining and refining what those musical ideas were. A more contemporary approach was required as far as production and execution was concerned. An openness to a broader range of influences was essential – Pop, RnB and even soundtrack were musical signposts that Dan could no longer deny having a bearing on his own compositions. Most importantly though, everything had to centre around melody. ‘I guess I have a voice’, he says, massively understating the fact, ‘I thought I should be braver and use it and make it the centre point of what I do’.

True to his word, that’s exactly what Dan delivered across his debut EP, Beginnings. From the opening piano chords of ‘Death of Me’ it was clear that, musically, this was already one giant leap from where he was in the confines of a band. His voice stirring gently and soulfully at first, chiming in over the sparse arrangement. From there, the music turned widescreen. This wasn’t just a well-crafted rock-crossover with a good vocal, this was a piece of music wouldn’t sound out of place under the opening titles of Bond film.

Elsewhere, “Hard to Breathe” and “Like Animals” showcased Byrne’s ability to channel razor-sharp, hook-laden contemporary rock with confidence and precision. The biggest surprise came in the form of ‘Easier’, a beautifully emotive ballad that balances fragility and power. There’s a tension at play right from its delicate opening to its sweeping string finale and soaring vocals, it captures the heart of what makes Byrne’s music so compelling – a blend of honesty, vulnerability, and cinematic scale.

Fast-forward then to the spring of 2025 – 18 months on since the release of ‘Beginnings’ – 3 of the EP’s 4 tracks had earned coveted playlist spots, joined by the feel-good funk-rock-soul hybrid “Sentimental” also making the grade), it was undeniable proof that Byrne’s leap of faith paid off.

“I’m so grateful,” Dan reflects, ‘having had the support from the people who came to the shows, bought the EP nd believed in the songs enough to give them radio play, it’s all spurred me on. It’s brought out a confidence, appreciation, a joy that’s made its way into the new material’.

‘This Is Where The Show Begins’ – Dan’s debut album – is full of those things and so much more. There’s a swagger alongside the sensitivity, a further broadening of musical scope. But at the centre of it, is that voice –  as powerful as it is vulnerable, as emotive as it is strong.

The lead single, ‘Saviour’ – the perfect album opener – bursts to life with attention-grabbing hard-rock stabs and pile-driving riffs. Its verses simmer with drama before the tension breaks in a chorus that makes it clear we’re in for one hell of a ride. It struts, it shimmies and it absolutely rocks. “Light ’em up,” indeed. There’s no let up as we barrel headlong into ‘She’s the Devil’ – Dan weighing in with a colossal vocal punctured by gonzo guitar gymnastics, the sheer euphoria spilling forth here is palpable.

We’re taken to church with ‘Praise Hell’ – its irresistible vocal motif ushering in a gospel-tinged blues laced with tasteful flourishes of Hammond and Fender Rhodes, as well as a guitar solo every bit as emotive as the blue-eyed soul vocal it follows to the spotlight.

Elsewhere, “Sober” offers a narrative far less obvious than its title implies, but is – as advertised – stained with regret. There are traces of Jelly Roll here, if he’d grown up on the Wirral and found himself making questionable decisions in the heart of London.

We perhaps get a glimpse of where Byrne is heading next with album closer ‘Home’ – a sprawling, soaring, shapeshifting piece of alt-rock which essentially is never in danger of losing its soul. It’s what Glenn Hughes and 30 Seconds To Mars might come up if they ever combined their superpowers.

‘This Is Where The Show Begins’ is the culmination of what has been an incredible journey so far. It’s a marker for what can happen when you back yourself, a calling card for following your gut. Bursting with ambition, diversity and authenticity, this is where it may truly begin for Dan, the exciting thing for us to ponder is where it should lead to next.
